Suspect Charged In Mysterious Fatal Shooting Of 23-Year-Old Richmond Man: Report

RICHMOND, CA — Nearly a year after a 23-year-old Richmond man was mysteriously gunned down blocks from his home, prosecutors have filed charges against a suspect, according to an East Bay Times report.

Joshawn Harris, 29, was charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Josue Cornejo in Richmond on Nov. 17, 2025, according to the report.

It's unclear whether Harris and Cornejo knew other before the fatal shooting. Cornejo's family told Patch last year that Cornejo stayed to himself and didn't have any enemies, leaving them wandering who would want him dead or why.

Harris was linked to the Cornejo's slaying after being accused of shooting at six people during two separate instances in Richmond in September, according to the report.

In addition to the murder charge stemming from Cornejo's killing, Harris also faces six counts of assault and four counts of gun possession charges, according to the report.

Authorities did not say how they connected Harris to Cornejo's killing, according to the report. Last year, the Richmond Police Department released footage of what appears to be a masked "person of interest in the killing."

Court records show Harris has been convicted of several crimes in the past, including pimping.

Cornejo was described by his family as a smart, humble, caring, and respectful man who greeted everyone with a smile.

Growing up, he enjoyed taking photos, playing sports, going to the park and watching the waves crash. He loved every meal his mother made, especially fried chicken, pancakes and eggs, his family said.

"He never had any hate in his heart," longtime family friend Glenda Luarca told Patch last year. "He was humble, happy all day, even if the world was falling apart around him."
