10 Steps To Improve Your Mental Health
As health care practitioners, we realize the importance of holistic health, which encompasses all aspects of health, including mental health

As health care practitioners, we realize that there is a strong mind-body connection. If the mind is not strong, then the physical body will suffer too. Thus, we are offering these 10 steps to help improve your mental health.
1. Consult with your general physician
The first step in any health-related issue is to consult your doctor. Your general physician knows you best and can advise you on the best course of action to take. General physicians can also provide basic psychiatric help, including depression screenings. They can then recommend a mental health clinician who can further advise you.

2. Use Your Brain
Ever heard the phrase "use it or loose it"? Well, there is much wisdom in that adage. Your brain is a muscle like a bicep or any other muscle in your body. Exercise your brain. Read a book, play chess, play sudoku; anything that challenges your brain to exercise is good for it.

3. Socialize
Having a social life and interacting with people is an important way to maintain mental health. Studies show that people with more social connections tend to be generally happier than those without.
4. Eat Healthy Well-Balanced Foods
As we discussed earlier, mental health is part of an overall holistic health. Eating healthy will help your neurons fire correctly and also promote well functioning physical systems. Certain foods also promote brain power, like omega-3s found in fish and walnuts.

5. Get More Sleep
We have highlighted the importance of getting more sleep. The amount of havoc that under-sleeping can cause on your mental health is substantial. It is highly recommended that you get your regular sleep, doctor’s orders.
6. Exercise, Exercise, Exercise
Exercising is an amazing way to regulate your mood. The endorphins released when you exercise make you feel good, plain and simple. Also, exercising can be meditative, helping your thoughts normalize. Exercising outside also adds the element of novel scenery. Exercising can be as easy as taking a walk or as intense as weight training. Either way, the benefits are extensive.
7. Meditate
Meditation has been clinically demonstrated to be an effective way of reducing stress and normalizing brain waves. There are several forms of medication, some more involved than others, but meditation doesn’t have to be complicated. Simply sit still for five minutes and turn off or limit any outside distractions. Try to clear your mind of outside stressors. You should start and end your day with a short meditation session.
8. Listen To Your Favorite Music
Similar to meditation, listening to your favorite music can help regulate brain waves and also reduce intrusive thoughts. An uplifting song can put you in a good mood. A sad song can help you deal with sad emotions.
9. Have A Support System
A support system includes anyone you can turn to when you are having problems. It’s someone you can trust, and similar to a therapist, the best thing they can do for you is listen and perhaps offer advice. Family members and friends tend to make the best support system.
10. Go To A Therapist
Going to a therapist doesn’t carry the same stigma that it did 20 years ago. If you are having any kind of mental or emotional problems, don’t hesitate to speak to a therapist. They are a great source of help and they are trained to understand our situation. Sometimes it just helps to talk. Sometimes the therapy may go a little deeper. Either way, a therapist can help you figure out the best course of action and then implement it.
