BEVERLY HILLS, CA — An hours-long armed standoff in Beverly Hills stretched late into the night Sunday but eventually ended with a hostage freed and the person behind the barricade in custody, authorities said.

Osvaldo DelRio, a rideshare driver wanted for trying to kill an officer, was held on $1 million bail for attempted murder, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The situation began when officers received a license plate alert on a Ford pickup tied to a felony around 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Beverly Hills police said. Officers located the truck at San Vicente and Beverly boulevards, and tried to stop it, resulting in a short pursuit that ended when the pickup hit a vehicle at Burton Way and Robertson Boulevard, according to police, leading to the barricade.

About 5:30 p.m., patrol cars and a police Bearcat armored vehicle surrounded the pickup.

The sheriff’s department Special Enforcement Bureau was called to the barricade to take over tactical command, the agency said in an advisory around 6:45 p.m.

In an update at about 9 p.m., the sheriff’s department reported that DelRio was wanted for the attempted murder of an officer as well as additional charges out of Beverly Hills, and that he was armed and had a hostage.

A woman was eventually allowed to leave the truck just before 11 p.m. Sheriff’s Deputy Tracy Koerner said she did not suffer any apparent injuries, but the suspect did not surrender.

Around 12:30 a.m., Beverly Hills police announced the standoff was over and the road would reopen.

Koerner told City News Service the attempted murder charge stemmed from DelRio trying to hit a deputy with the pickup truck during an attempted stop in Lennox. The deputy suffered minor injuries after he was struck, Koerner said.

DelRio was taken to a hospital for medical treatment, according to the sheriff’s department.
