BEVERLY HILLS, CA — A rideshare driver dragged a sheriff’s deputy 150 feet over the weekend before holding a woman hostage in an hours-long standoff in Beverly Hills later the same day, authorities said.
Osvaldo DelRio was held on $1 million bail for attempted murder, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Authorities tried to conduct a routine traffic stop on DelRio shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday at 104th Street and Hawthorne Avenue in Lennox, according to the department.
“During the traffic stop, deputies observed a handgun in the driver's waistband,” the agency said in an advisory Monday evening. “As deputies attempted to pull the suspect out of the vehicle, the suspect began to drive away, dragging the deputy approximately 150 feet.”
The deputy was taken to a hospital and released, according to the department.
Officers in Beverly Hills located DelRio’s Ford pickup around 3 p.m. at San Vicente and Beverly boulevards, and tried to stop it, resulting in a short pursuit that ended when the truck hit a vehicle at Burton Way and Robertson Boulevard, according to police.
DelRio refused to leave the pickup and the sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau responded to the scene around 4 p.m., authorities said. Multiple crisis negotiation teams tried for hours to end the standoff, according to the sheriff’s department.
The hostage escaped around midnight, authorities said, and, at about 2 a.m. Monday, sheriff’s deputies used a chemical to get DelRio to leave the truck. Once outside, he refused to comply with authorities but eventually submitted in the wake of non-lethal tactics and a K-9, according to the department.
He was taken to a hospital for medical clearance before being booked, authorities said.
