There is an old expression: "Don't make an elephant out of a flea."

I understand that expression differently now.

Sometimes the problem in front of us is small. But our mind grabs it, analyzes it, adds fear to it, connects it to the past, predicts the future—and suddenly that little problem becomes enormous.

The flea becomes an elephant.

I know this because I have watched my own mind do it.

Something happens in my life. Maybe it is a problem with work, money, relationships, my future, or simply uncertainty. The actual situation may not be catastrophic. But my mind starts talking.

What if this gets worse?
What if I lose everything?
What if I can't handle it?
What if something is wrong with me?
What if tomorrow is even worse?

One thought creates another thought. Then another.

Soon I am no longer dealing with what is actually happening. I am dealing with a whole world that my mind has created around it.

And my body doesn't always know the difference.

My heart can beat faster. My muscles tighten. My breathing changes. I lose energy. I don't sleep well. I become irritated or afraid. I don't enjoy the people and things around me.

The original problem may still be small, but now I am carrying an elephant.

When My Mind Made Me Sick

There have been times when I felt that my own thoughts were making me physically sick.

The problem wasn't imaginary. The emotions weren't fake. The physical sensations were real.

But I began to understand something important: my reaction to the problem was sometimes becoming much bigger than the problem itself.

Fear created more fear.

Worry created more worry.

One negative thought became ten negative thoughts.

And when I repeated the same story inside my head every day, my body started living inside that story too.

That realization changed something for me.

Instead of immediately believing everything my mind tells me, I started asking:

What is actually happening right now?

Not tomorrow.

Not next month.

Not the worst possible scenario.

Right now.

Sometimes I discover that there really is a problem, and I need to take action.

But sometimes I discover something completely different:

There is a small problem in front of me—and a giant elephant living only in my thoughts.

The Mind Is Powerful

Our mind is an incredible tool. It can create ideas, businesses, art, relationships, dreams and solutions.

But that same imagination can create frightening futures that haven't happened.

The goal is not to stop thinking.

The goal is to recognize when I am using my mind—and when my mind is using me.

I am learning to come back to my body.

To breathe.

To move.

To feel my feet on the ground.

To look around and notice where I actually am.

And then ask myself:

Is the elephant really standing in front of me?

Or did my mind take a flea and spend all night making it bigger?

I am still learning this.

I still worry. I still experience fear. I still have moments when my thoughts become louder than reality.

But now I can recognize the pattern.

And sometimes that recognition is enough to make the elephant a little smaller.

Until eventually, I can see the flea again.
