POSTURAL DETECTIVE CASE FILE: THE WOUNDED WARRIOR

Some injuries happen in a second.

Others develop after years of carrying the load.

Our next Postural Detective case involves a U.S. military veteran who served his country, including deployment to Afghanistan. During his years of service, his body was repeatedly asked to perform under demanding conditions—physical training, long periods on his feet, carrying equipment, body armor, packs and other heavy loads.

Years later, the mission may be over.

But the body can still remember the workload.

Our client came to LifeRX experiencing discomfort and restriction around his shoulders and neck. Instead of simply massaging the painful area, the Postural Detective began investigating.

What happened to the shoulder?

What happened to the neck?

And could years of carrying heavy equipment have contributed to the movement patterns we see today?

We assessed posture, shoulder movement, neck rotation, thoracic mobility and muscular tension. We also looked at how the shoulder blades were moving and how the upper body had adapted to years of demanding physical activity.

That is an important part of the LifeRX philosophy:

Don't just chase the pain. Investigate the history.

A veteran's body has a story.

Heavy load carriage and repetitive physical demands can place substantial stress on the musculoskeletal system. But every veteran is different, and neck or shoulder pain can have many possible causes. That's why an individual assessment matters.

THE MISSION CHANGES

During military service, the mission may have been performance:

Carry the equipment. Complete the task. Keep moving.

After service, there can be a different mission:

Restore movement. Improve mobility. Build strength. Recover.

At LifeRX Physio Massage, manual therapy may be used as one part of that process to address muscular tension and comfortable movement. We can also examine mobility, stability and movement patterns and help determine when another healthcare professional should be involved.

This isn't about treating veterans as broken.

It's about recognizing what their bodies have been through and giving those bodies the attention they deserve.

POSTURAL DETECTIVE VERDICT

Sometimes the clue isn't hidden in what happened yesterday.

Sometimes you have to investigate years of physical history.

For this Wounded Warrior, we're following those clues from the neck and shoulders through the rest of the kinetic chain—one movement at a time.

The service may be behind him.
The recovery mission continues.
