Best Hanukkah Songs To Celebrate: Patch Holiday Playlist

Here's a roundup of songs to get you in the spirit while lighting the Menorah, heating up the oil for latkes, and spending time with family.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA – It's the first day of Hanukkah, a Jewish holiday rooted in history. The story of Hanukkah starts with the Maccabees, an army of Jewish rebels based in Israel, who revolted against the Seleucid Greek King Antiochus because the king had tried to kill them.

The oppressed Maccabees defeated Antiochus' troops to reclaim the Temple in Jerusalem. To celebrate their victory, Judah Maccabee called on his followers to cleanse the Second Temple, rebuild its altar and light its seven-pronged menorah. Although they only had enough oil to keep the menorah lit for one full day, it remarkably lasted for eight days which gave the group enough time to get new oil – thus why the holiday is known as the festival of lights, according to the History Channel website.

Jewish people now celebrate Hanukkah by lighting a menorah every night for eight days; modern menorahs have eight prongs with a large prong (shamash) in the middle. Check out these menorah lightings and Hanukkah celebrations in the Los Angeles area.
