The Beths And More Concerts Around Los Angeles This Week

Here's a Q&A with New Zealand indie rock band The Beths. Plus, a list of live music this week around LA County.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA – There are a ton of great shows to catch this week in Los Angeles County, and we've gathered a list of live music from twenty of the county's top music venues for this week's round-up. From blues, to throwbacks, to indie rock, and electronic, there's something for everyone to see.

Patch caught up with Liz Stokes, lead singer and guitarist of New Zealand indie rock band The Beths. The four bandmates are longtime friends, first releasing an EP in 2016 called Warm Blood before their freshman album Future Me Hates Me was released in August. Catch The Beths perform at 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28 at the Roxy Theatre.

EH: In making music, are you more inspired by interpersonal relationships or the environment you’re in?

LS: Interpersonal relationships I suppose. I write the most when my emotions are overwhelming, and what is happening with the people around me are much more likely to affect the way I am feeling.

EH: Do you have any guilty pleasures (music or otherwise)?

LS: My biggest non-productive time sink is Reddit, which I will always feel guilty about. Since social media kind of feels like work, Reddit is my mindless clicking and scrolling solution, which should allow me to check out and switch my brain off, but the guilt is so strong.

EH: How does your music fit into the rich history of New Zealand indie rock? (Any favorites?)

LS: New Zealand has great guitar bands, I am very passionate about this! I am not steeped in the canon of Flying Nun I'm afraid, though Jonathan is. My fave Nun band is Bressa Creeting Cake. I grew up on local guitar pop bands like Good Shirt and Elemeno P, who were New Zealand rock bands that got played on commercial radio. The current scene is very strong though, do check out bands like Tiny Ruins, Hans Pucket, Wax Chattles, Miss June, Kane Strang, Mermaidens, Polyester, Astro Children... the list is long and great and I'm not even scratching the surface.

EH: What’s it like being in a band with your friends? Do band-related issues ever trickle into other aspects of life?

LS: I have never wanted to make music alone, I love the feeling of making and playing music with other musicians and feeding off the energy of each other. It's why I play music. It's strange being a musician though, your social life is your work life and you all become so intertwined in each other's lives. Sometimes that is difficult.

The Beths perform Friday, Sept. 28 with Ariel View at 9 p.m. at the Roxy Theatre.
