Map Compares Size Of CA Wildfires To City You Live In

To understand the scope of the destruction wrought by California's three wildfires, an interactive map compares them to major U.S. cities.

CALIFORNIA – The trio of wildfires devastating California have burned more than 240,000 acres, killed 66 and forced the evacuations of hundreds of thousands of residents. NBC released an interactive map to compare the size of the ravenous Hill, Camp and Woolsey fires to the 1,000 most-populous cities or towns in the U.S., and the results are heartbreaking. Together, the California wildfires are about as big as one Indianapolis or 17 Manhattans.

NBC used data from the U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. Census Bureau to compile the map. Here are the California fires compared to ten of the biggest cities in the country:

New York, NY (303 land square miles):
