Fourth Consecutive Curfew Announced In Beverly Hills

Beverly Hills announced Monday night that curfews will continue in town.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA — With residents already hunkered down for the third night in row, Beverly Hills announced Monday night that another curfew would be in effect from Tuesday at 1 p.m. until Wednesday at 5:30 a.m.

“Tomorrow, we will implement a single citywide curfew,” Mayor Lester Friedman said in a city news release sent just after 7 p.m. “I know we are all feeling a great sense of uncertainty tonight. We are grateful to the National Guard and our mutual aid partners from several neighboring agencies for helping us to keep our community safe.”

The new curfew follows a tumultuous day of protesting all over the Southland, from Van Nuys to Downtown LA to Westwood to West Hollywood to Hollywood. Protests in West L.A. began peacefully, with one officer even kneeling in solidarity with the protesters. But after the countywide 6 p.m. curfew went into effect, police began arresting dozens of protesters in all locations who refused to leave. Meanwhile, looting was reported in first Van Nuys and later in Hollywood, and protesters briefly blocked entrance to the 405 freeway.

Although dozens of protesters were arrested outside the Los Angeles Country Club on Wilshire Blvd. just west of the city, Beverly Hills has been relatively quiet after a chaotic Saturday of protests, looting, and vandalism along Rodeo Drive, and a calmer Sunday. On Sunday night, the city announced that it was imposing two curfews from Monday, June 1 to Tuesday June 2 at 5:30 a.m.: one in the downtown Business District beginning at 1 p.m., and a citywide curfew beginning at 4 pm. On noon Monday, the city announced that it was moving the curfew up to 1 p.m. in anticipation of the planned West L.A. protests.

No major disturbances have been reported within the city of Beverly Hills as of Monday evening.
