Local Eater To Compete In World Taco-Eating Championship

Mary Bowers, a Major League Eating athlete, is among the 15 eaters who will gather on National Taco Day to attempt to break a world record.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA – Major League Eating athlete Mary Bowers, of Beverly Hills, is among the group of competitive eaters that will gather in Santa Monica on National Taco Day for the Pacific Park World Taco-Eating Championship. About 15 Major League Eaters across the nation will meet on Oct. 4 at Pacific Park to chow down on as many street-style carnitas tacos in eight minutes in an attempt to set a new world record.

“Pacific Park is pleased to host the inaugural World Taco Eating Contest on National Taco Day in the United States while featuring the number one eater and many top competitors in the Major League Eating circuit,” Nathan Smithson, Marketing and Business Development Manager at Pacific Park, said. “We are thrilled that the contest is getting so much attention and hope this will be the beginning of an annual celebration of LA’s favorite food, the humble street taco.”

Top eating talent and their rankings, will include: Joey Chestnut (#1) of San Jose, CA; Gideon Oji (#6) from Morrow, GA; Adrian Morgan (#8) from New Orleans, LA; Juan Rodriguez (#11) from Crestwood, IL; Erik Denmark (#20) from Scottsdale, AZ; Steve Hendry (#22) from Dixon, CA; Sarah Reinecke (#29) from Seattle, WA; and Mary Bowers (#49) from Beverly Hills, CA.

“MLE is honored to celebrate National Taco Day, and all those who love tacos, with the first-ever Pacific Park taco-eating contest,” says Major League Eating emcee Sam Barclay. “We fully expect a new world record from this event.”

The competition starts at 4 p.m. Pacific Park is located at 380 Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica, CA 90401.
