Beverly Hills Temple of the Arts; Saban Theatre

8440 Wilshire Boulevard; Beverly Hills, CA 90211

Temple of the Arts at the Saban Theatre, 8440 Wilshire Blvd. in Beverly Hills will hold a special Shabbat service celebrating the “Shared Heritage of Freedom” with the City of Refuge’s award winning “Spirit of David” 40 voice gospel choir. There will be a screening of the trailer of the soon to be completed documentary film Shared Legacies. The film tells the story of the Black Jewish alliance during the early days of the civil rights struggle. The film’s director Dr. Shari Lynne Rogers will be in attendance.

Joining the service from Stanford University is Dr. Clarence B. Jones, the former personal counsel, draft speech writer and personal friend of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. Jones. Dr. Jones established practice in entertainment law in Southern California in 1960, and at age 36, Jones joined the investment banking and brokerage firm of Carter, Berlind & Weill where he worked alongside future Citigroup Chairman and CEO, Sanford I. Weill and Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman, Arthur Levitt. Jones was the first African-American to be named an allied member of the New York Stock Exchange. Jones joined the team of lawyers defending King in the midst of King’s 1960 tax fraud trial; the case was resolved in King’s favor in May 1960. Jones and his family relocated to New York to be close to the Harlem office of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and he joined the firm of Lubell, Lubell and Jones as a partner.

Temple of the Arts is the largest arts and entertainment industry synagogue in the U.S. and approaches religion through music, drama, art, dance and film. The temple’s spiritual leader, Rabbi David Baron stated: We must strengthen the bonds of brotherhood in every generation to preserve the freedoms we cherish for future generations.

Rabbi Baron and Clarence Jones will be available for pre-service interviews from 7:15 pm.

ALL ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND.
