Brentwood School Seeks To Deny Punitive Damages To Terminated Math Teacher

Brentwood School is asking a judge to deny punitive damages to a former math teacher who is suing the school.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Brentwood School is asking a judge to deny punitive damages to a former math teacher who is suing the private K-12 institution, alleging she was terminated while on medical leave because of her age and health and as a backlash for taking time off.

Amy Page's Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit allegations include both age and disability discrimination, retaliation and failure to take steps to prevent discrimination and retaliation. The suit does not state Page's age. She seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.

On Thursday, school attorneys filed court papers with Judge Jeffery McFarland in advance of a Nov. 17 hearing, stating that Page has not provided any evidence the institution acted with malice, oppression or fraud toward her.

"Instead, plaintiff conclusorily alleges that Brentwood took away upper level courses because of her age and disability, that she was not promoted at Brentwood because of her age or her disability and that Brentwood retaliated against her accessing (family) leave, relying solely on the serious nature of the asserted causes of action rather than alleging specific facts sufficient to support a claim for punitive damages," the Brentwood attorneys further state.

Page was hired in 2008. She contends the alleged discrimination began in fall 2023 when the administration took away her upper-level courses, put her on two discriminatory and unfair performance improvement plans, required her to meet impossible deadlines, barred her from teaching honors courses, denied the plaintiff the ability to teach summer classes and gave her written warnings without justification.

Page filed a written complaint with the upper school director in March 2024, but no investigation followed and the disparate treatment continued, according to the suit filed Nov. 24. Page's psychiatrist put the plaintiff on medical leave in October 2024 and the alleged hostile work environment resumed when she returned in February 2025, exacerbating her symptoms, the suit states.

In late March 2025, the head of school told Page her contract would not be renewed for the next year, actions she believes were due to her age and health and because she took medical leave, the suit states. Page's psychiatrist again put the plaintiff on medical leave in April and she was terminated last June 30, according to the suit.

A case management conference is scheduled for Sept. 22.

Maroon 5 band members including Adam Levine, Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden and former member Ryan Dusick attended Brentwood School while forming the band Kara's Flowers, which evolved into Maroon 5. Journalist Andrew Breitbart also is an alumnus.
