Lions weigh up to 500 pounds and may be up to 10 ft. in length. The second-largest member of the cat family after the tiger is in trouble. Today there are half as many African lions than there were 25 years ago, according to National Geographic. "Conservation programs aim to protect the disappearing species by promoting human-lion cohabitation across the African savanna," NatGeo reports.
