Brentwood School Baseball Wins League Title

The Eagles edge Windward 4-3 in nine innings to clinch at least a share of first place.

Despite being ranked No. 10 in the latest CIF Southern Section Division 6 poll, it was hard to know just how strong Brentwood School's varsity baseball team was heading into this week's home-and-home series with Windward.

The Eagles had an impressive record but had rarely been tested, so it remained to be seen how they would handle adversity in the most important game of the year. The answer? They handled it just fine.

Pitchers Alex Sale and Evan Abraham combined on a seven-hitter and David Rosenthal had three hits and three runs scored as Brentwood rallied for a 4-3 victory in nine innings Tuesday afternoon at Windward's Foley Field. Jacob Charms had two doubles and one RBI and Andy Currier had a double, a single and two RBIs for Brentwood.

Sale pitched five and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Abraham allowed three hits over the last three and one-third innings with five strikeouts to pick up the victory.

Both teams entered the game undefeated in league and the Eagles clinched at least a share of the Delphic League crown. They can win the title outright by beating Windward at home Thursday (first pitch at 4 p.m.). However, if the Wildcats prevail, the teams will be co-champions.

Brentwood (14-2, 6-0) scored a run in the top of the first inning but Windward took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third. The visiting Eagles got one in the third and one in the fifth to force extra innings.

Right-hander Kunal Patel allowed six hits and three runs with nine strikeouts in six innings and brother Kirav Patel pitched the last three innings for Windward.

Outfielder Zak Levine had two hits and one RBI and Michael Huettner, Kunal Patel, Kirva Patel, Tanner Savitsky, and Aven Helford each added one hit for the Wildcats (12-11 overall, 6-1 in league).
