Join us for a special lecture by award-winning author Keith Wailoo, centered on his book Pushing Cool: Big Tobacco, Racial Marketing, and the Untold Story of the Menthol Cigarette.
Wailoo traces the story of how cigarette companies crafted the appeal of menthol cigarettes—first by tapping into Americans’ rising health and cancer anxieties from the 1920s through the 1950s, and later by deliberately cultivating Black consumers in urban markets in the 1960s. He reveals how the industry built, protected, and fiercely defended these markets for decades, even as public health concerns mounted and regulatory pressures grew. The talk explores the unexpected alliances, critics, and political battles that shaped this contentious history of tobacco, race, health, and American business.
Jointly sponsored by the Southern California Society for the History of Medicine, this program takes inspiration from the <a href="https://www.getty.edu/projects/johnson-publishing-company-archive/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Johnson Publishing Company Archives</a> and photographs in the Getty Research Institute’s special collections.
The talk will be followed by a public reception from 7:30–8:30pm.

Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier

Two of America’s most iconic piers — the historic Santa Monica Pier and Chicago’s Navy Pier — will unite coast-to-coast on Saturday, June 6, 2026 (6/6/26), for a special Route 66 “Pier to Pier” celebration honoring the Centennial anniversary of the legendary highway connecting Chicago and Santa Monica.
Beginning at 10 a.m. local time, free rides will be offered for 66 minutes aboard the world-famous Navy Pier Centennial Wheel and Pacific Park Pacific Wheel in celebration of Route 66.
The one-day event celebrates the historic connection between Chicago and the recent dedication of Navy Pier as the new symbolic eastern starting point of Historic Route 66, and Santa Monica, home to the iconic western terminus and “End of the Trail” at the Santa Monica Pier. 
“Like Navy Pier, Route 66 has always represented adventure, discovery, and the spirit of exploration,” said Marilynn Gardner, President and CEO of Navy Pier. “As the symbolic starting point of Historic Route 66, Navy Pier is proud to join Santa Monica Pier in celebrating the road that has connected generations of travelers from the shores of Lake Michigan to the Pacific Ocean.”
The Navy Pier Centennial Wheel, which celebrated its 10th Anniversary on May 27, continues Chicago’s historic legacy as the birthplace of the Ferris wheel, first introduced by George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. 
“The connection between Chicago and Santa Monica has always been at the heart of Route 66,” said Jim Harris, Executive Director and Historian at the Santa Monica Pier. “This celebration brings together two iconic destinations linked by history, nostalgia, and the timeless excitement of reaching the end — or beginning — of America’s most famous highway.”
At Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier, which celebrated its 30th Anniversary on May 26, guests can also experience the Route 66 West Coaster roller coaster, featuring vintage gas pumps and license plates in the loading zone. The ride vehicles are inspired by classic American touring cars, creating the feeling of stepping back into a bygone era of road travel.
The Santa Monica Pier is also home to the nostalgic “End of the Trail” sign, while Pacific Park features two dedicated Route 66 photo spots where guests can capture the moment as soon as they arrive at the Park. Together, the locations are visited by millions of travelers each year.
The Pacific Wheel at Pacific Park is recognized as the world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel and features more than 174,000 LED lights capable of displaying dynamic animated lighting entertainment above the Pacific Ocean. 
Free Centennial Wheel rides will be offered for 66 minutes to registered guests from 10 to 11:06 a.m., local time. Navy Pier and Santa Monica Pier Unite for Historic Route 66 ‘Pier to Pier’ Celebration on 6/6/26

The latest film in Getty’s Artist Dialogues series features Ofelia Esparza and her daughter, Rosanna Esparza Ahrens, whose multigenerational practice of creating ofrendas, or altars, weaves together memory, customs, and community. Long recognized for their role in helping establish and sustain Día de los Muertos traditions in the city, the Esparzas have shaped the practice as both a communal ritual and a contemporary art form. In the short film, Ofelia and Rosanna Esparza: Made to Remember (11:55 min), they reflect on the ofrenda as both cultural obligation and art: a bridge between the living and the dead, and between the stories of generations past and those yet to come.
Ofelia, born in East Los Angeles in 1932, learned the practice from her mother, who brought her traditions from Huanimaro, Mexico. She has spent decades building elaborate ofrendas that honor ancestors through handmade paper flowers, textiles, photographs, objects and layered narratives grounded in the conviction that to be forgotten is the most final death of all. Rosanna carries this legacy forward, exploring how the making itself, the gathering, the storytelling, the shared labor, is as much the offering as the altar it produces.
Together, Ofelia and Rosanna illuminate the ofrenda as a form of ephemeral art: carefully composed with attention to focal point, dimension, and material, yet always temporary by design. Here, conservation carries different meaning than it typically does in cultural heritage contexts. Rather than relying on permanence, the artform is sustained through intergenerational continuity, carried forward by storytelling, teaching and community solidarity.
Following the screening, Ofelia and Rosanna Esparza will join Los Angeles County's Civic Art Conservation and Collections Manager Laleña Vellanoweth for a conversation on the conservation of their work and audience Q&amp;A.

The Santa Monica Pier and The Crow invite families to celebrate creativity, storytelling, self-expression, and joy at the return of Fabulous Fables, a free all-ages community event on Sunday, June 7, inside the historic Merry Go-Round Building at the Santa Monica Pier.
Designed especially for children ages 2–10 and their families, Fabulous Fables
combines drag queen storytelling, live performances, interactive art activities, and community celebration into a colorful morning by the beach.
The free event schedule includes:

Guests can enjoy drag queen storytime, a drag singalong and comedy show, face painting, hands-on painting activities with Paint:LAB easels, and a special poem reading by the Santa Monica Poet Laureate.
Hosted inside the iconic Merry Go-Round building overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Fabulous Fables creates a welcoming and imaginative environment where children and families can laugh, create, and celebrate together through storytelling and art.
In recognition of Pride Month and Santa Monica's SaMo Pride celebration, Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier will illuminate its iconic Ferris wheel in rainbow colors on the evening of June 7, creating a colorful tribute visible along the coastline.

From crafting your own “Book of Life” to weighing your "heart" on a larger-than-life scale, visitors of all ages are invited to explore, create, and discover together in a day filled with music, imagination, and fun.

Maqam Band 11am, 12:25pm, 1:50pm, and 3:15pm 45-minute performances This Los Angeles–based Egyptian ensemble, led by keyboardist and vocalist Raafat Boushra, performs music rooted in the maqam tradition—the melodic framework of much Middle Eastern music. Featuring qanun, riq, vocals, and keys, the ensemble brings the sounds of historic Cairo to life while celebrating the rich musical traditions of the Nile Valley.
Sounds of Egypt with DJ Passionfruit 10:15am, 11:45pm, 1:10pm, 2:35pm, and 4pm 40- and 45-minute performances DJ Passionfruit presents a curated mix inspired by ancient and modern Egypt, blending traditional rhythms with contemporary beats. Drawing from a wide-ranging record collection, she creates an inviting soundscape that moves across time—easy to drop into, listen, and enjoy.

Write Your Story in Symbols with Marianne Sadowski Inspired by The Egyptian Book of the Dead exhibition, create a personal “Book of Life” using hieroglyphic imagery and simple printmaking techniques. Fold, stamp, and layer your own accordion-style book—filling it with stories, memories, and imagination. 
Symbols &amp; Secrets: Create a Duat Box with Marcus Kuiland Nazario Design and decorate a small wooden Duat Box—named for the ancient Egyptian underworld—drawing on imagery such as papyrus scrolls and mummy wrappings. Add a scarab and feather to your finished box, inspired by ancient ideas about the heart and its journey—symbols of balance, truth, and care. 
Make a Heart with Ana Sanchez Create a heart that reflects who you are. Using cardboard, colorful paper, and markers, design something bold, playful, or intricate. Guided by artist Ana Sanchez, this all-ages workshop invites creativity, self-expression, and a little bit of fun. 
The Weighing of the Heart Bring your handmade heart to a monumental scale inspired by a famous scene in the Egyptian Book of the Dead. Created by artist Kiel Johnson, the six-foot installation reimagines the ancient ritual of weighing a heart against a feather belonging to the goddess Ma’at, who symbolized truth and balance.
Place your heart on the scale, see how it measures up, and capture the moment—a playful way to reflect on what matters most.

During the 1970s and '80s, several artists published important histories highlighting the wealth of African American artistry that had been overlooked. Two landmark publications—Viewfinders: Black Women Photographers by Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe and Black Photographers, 1840 to 1940: An Illustrated Bio-Bibliography by Deborah Willis—greatly contributed to the development of the field of photographic history. This conversation brings the two luminaries together to discuss their dual roles as artists and historians.
