More than 30 million Americans, many of them children, suffer from eczema (or atopic dermatitis), an incurable and non-contagious skin disease. People with eczema experience constant itch and flares of inflammation. The uncontrollable itch can interfere with sleep and the ability to participate in certain activities, as well as lead to serious infections due to broken skin from scratching. Eczema is an anguishing disease to live with: a treatment may help a patient for six months then inexplicably stop working, and a treatment that works for one person may not work for another.

“Part of the association’s mission is to educate people that eczema is not just a rough, red patch of itchy skin, but a skin disease that can cover your whole body and can lead to debilitating infections,” said Stephanie Knox, Itching for a Cure Volunteer National Chair. “This disease involves long-term suffering and impacts the quality of the lives of the people who have it, and those of us who care for them. Those lives can have a different outlook with research, education, and awareness. The Itching for a Cure walk is a great way for the community to get involved in our mission, and have fun while doing it. ”

Itching for a Cure gives people dealing with eczema a positive outlet for all their frustration,” said Julie Block, National Eczema Association CEO. “For many eczema patients, Itching for a Cure helps them talk about their disease for the first time to family, friends, and colleagues,”
