The Unknown Henry Miller focuses on Henry Miller's career before his "Paris books" were published in the States. During this time of obscurity, and in particular during his "Big Sur years," Miller wrote and published more than twenty books and pamphlets, painted watercolors, married and divorced twice, and raised two children. Drawing extensively on correspondence between Miller and the members of his intimate literary circle – Anaïs Nin, Lawrence Durrell, and Alfred Perlès, to name a few – and examining closely key texts, this biography presents a portrait of Miller struggling to find an American audience for his work, and to reach his personal goal of spiritual self-realization.
