Oscar Nominations 2018: Who Will Win An Academy Award?

The nominees for the 2018 Academy Awards were announced Tuesday morning, and "The Shape of Water" leads the pack with 13 nods.

HOLLYWOOD, CA — The clear darling of the 90th Academy Awards is the sci-fi fantasy romance "The Shape of Water," which garnered 13 nominations Tuesday, including a best picture, best director, and best actress.

The other juggernaut of this awards season, "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri," also earned a best picture nod along with "Call Me By Your Name," "Darkest Hour," "Dunkirk," "Get Out," "Lady Bird," "Phantom Thread" and "The Post." While "Three Billboards," won the Golden Globe for best drama film and earned the ensemble-cast award at Sunday's Screen Actors Guild Awards, director Guillermo del Toro's "The Shape of Water" is a critic favorite that won the Critics Choice Award and the Producers Guild of America award for motion pictures on Saturday. It was snubbed, however, without a nomination in SAG’s best ensemble cast category.

Frances McDormand is the favorite in the best actress category, having swept the pre-Oscar awards so far this season for her role as the mother of a murdered daughter in "Three Billboards." Though it would be a clear upset if she didn't win, having dominated the awards season, she had stiff competition in perennial Oscar contender Meryl Streep, nominated for her role in "The Post." Also earning best actress nods are Sally Hawkins for "The Shape of Water," Saoirse Ronan for "Lady Bird" and Margot Robbie for "I, Tonya."

Similarly, the pre-Oscar awards season's best actor category has been dominated by a single performance. Gary Oldman's uncanny portrayal of wartime British Prime Minister Winston Churchill has already earned him several awards, and now he is considered the favorite for the best actor Oscar. Also nominated were Timothee Chalamet for "Call Me By Your Name," Daniel Day-Lewis for "Phantom Thread," Daniel Kaluuya for "Get Out" and Denzel Washington for "Roman J. Israel, Esq."

Both McDormand and Oldman won Golden Globe, Critics' Choice and SAG awards this year. Supporting actors Allison Janney of "I, Tonya" and Sam Rockwell of "Three Billboards" also dominated these same award shows giving them the edge as Oscar front-runners.
