Water Main Breaks Affect Customers in Brentwood, Echo Park

An 8-inch water main ruptured at Mandeville Canyon Road and Westridge Road in Brentwood with flooding reported at 1 a.m.

A water main rupture flooded a street and businesses and left a small amount Department of Water and Power customers in Echo Park without service this morning, while another main break affected Brentwood customers.

The 8-inch main break at Sunset Boulevard and Alvarado Street was reported at 3:05 a.m. and “affected 15 services,” including multi-family residences and businesses,” said Gale Harris of the DWP.

A service can include more than one customer, she noted.

“Flooding in the street probably damaged three to four businesses,” Harris said. Broadcast video shows flooded aisles at a discount store.

The flooding was also raising the street and sidewalks, Harris said.

DWP repair crews were on the scene beginning repairs and had initially hoped to have service restored by 2 p.m. and lanes of Alvarado Street were closed for a while.

However, there were some complications with sewer pipes in the area, said Maryanne Pierson of the DWP. Pierson said this evening crews were confident repairs would be completed by 8 p.m.

The break affected 10 to 15 customers. No damage was reported, Harris said.

Pierson said tonight there was no estimate on when repairs would be completed, so crews were expected to be on the scene well into the night.
