CALABASAS, CA — Authorities rescued four people from Malibu Creek State Park on Monday evening after recent rains created treacherous conditions.

The five-hour rescue ended with no significant injuries, authorities said. The four hikers were airlifted to safety around 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Malibu authorities were assisted by the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Authorities initially failed to reach the hikers via boat or foot. LAFD eventually was able to lower a medic down to get the hikers to higher ground, where they were hoisted by helicopter.

"Rescuers had to contend with a deep narrow canyon, pitch black darkness, rushing water and frigid temps during this five hour operation. Fortunately all victims and personnel returned safely," the rescue team said in a Facebook post.
