A Baseball Win Would Be Nice

Calabasas sports: Calabasas High has been struggling, and a victory today heading into spring break would be good timing.

Top right-hander Jacob Fields is the scheduled starting pitcher for Calabasas today at 3:30 p.m. against Long Beach Wilson in St. Paul baseball tournament game at La Mirada High, and Calabasas sure could use a win.

It’s been a rough go for the Coyotes, who’ve lost five of the past six to fall to 7-12, 3-7 in the Marmonte League, and the boys would love to have a little pick-me-up heading into a nine-day spring break.

“A win today would be great so we could back into league play on high note. It would boost our confidence a lot,” Fields said. “I’m really excited to be back on the mound. It’s been a while.”

Fields is 4-2 with a 2.62 ERA, but he’s pitched just two innings over the past 17 days. In his last start, he pitched 7 2/3 innings in a 3-2 loss to Birmingham.  He had one other appearance, getting a save against Agoura.

“I’ve been pitching pretty well, but I haven’t pitched in a Marmonte League game in a while except closing against Agoura,” he said.

Calabasas still has a chance to salvage its season and make the playoffs, but it’s a tough stretch ahead with Simi Valley, Moorpark and a non-league game against power Chatsworth all looming.

“No matter what, we’re approaching every game as a must-win game,” Fields said. “Any team can beat anyone on any given day. I mean, who would have thought Simi Valley and Westlake would be leading the league?”

Some of Calabasas’ other top players are Alex Rubanowitz, Anthony Dicosimo, Sean Ladendecker and Travis Cassidy.

“It’s going to be pretty tough once we get back, but I don’t think our record really shows how good a team we are,” Rubanowitz said. “When we play well, we can beat anybody. We’re still working on it.”

Discosimo has a seven-game hitting streak, and he’s 6 for 11 over the past three games to raise his average to .385.

“He’s seeing the ball like it’s a beach ball. He’s really doing well,” Fields said.

TENNIS ANYONE?

Viewpoint’s boys tennis team is 9-1 overall and undefeated in Liberty League competition, and the Patriots have climbed to No. 1 in the Southern Section Division IV rankings.

“They’re really coming together both on and off the court,” coach Travis Kikugawa said. “If they remain focused and hungry in the postseason, they will find themselves in position to do some special things.”

HERE'S THE KICKER

FC Hasental, a men's semipro soccer team, plays at Calabasas High, and the next home game is Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Eric Warner, who coaches boys soccer at Viewpoint, started the club in 2005, and Kikugawa is on the team, too.

“It’s pretty much a local team made up of kids who grew up together in the area,” Kikugawa said. “The team has grown tremendously on all fronts.”
