Elevated Oil Prices Add New Pressure to 2026 Holiday Private Jet Travel

LOS ANGELES, Calif. Private jet travelers vacationing for the holidays may face a more expensive season as elevated oil prices add additional cost pressure to an already high-demand period.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), global oil inventories have declined this year by approximately 400 million barrels, with this trend continuing through the end of 2026.

This makes early holiday planning key, according to TruNorth Jets, a California-based private jet charter brokerage arranging domestic and international travel.

"Fuel is a significant component of what it costs to operate a private aircraft. When energy prices move sharply, the charter market feels it," said Sarah Oberman, Founder and CEO of TruNorth Jets. "Travelers may not always see fuel listed separately on a charter quote, but it is built into the aircraft operating economics. This holiday season, we have the combination of elevated fuel costs and increased demand around peak travel dates."

In the US, jet fuel averaged $5.875 per gallon in February 2026 versus $7.292 per gallon in August 2026, a 24.1% increase. With Brent crude oil at $91 per barrel in August, compared with $84 per barrel in July, the agency forecasts Brent to average approximately $90 per barrel during the second half of 2026 due to Middle East crude oil production and exports affecting global supply.

For private aviation, the effect can extend beyond fuel while passengers are aboard.

"On a charter trip, you're not necessarily paying only for the fuel between your departure and destination," Oberman said. "An aircraft may have to fly empty to pick you up or reposition after dropoff. When fuel becomes more expensive, those movements follow suit."

With the holiday period traditionally among the busiest travel periods of the year, competition for private aircraft increases.

Because many charter operators quote trips within 90 days of departure, September is a crucial planning window for holiday travel. Waiting means travelers may have fewer choices among aircraft types, departure times and airports as peak dates approach.

Holiday periods can also bring peak-day surcharges, minimum daily flight-time requirements and tighter cancellation terms depending on the operator and itinerary.

"The advantage of starting early isn't simply locking something in as quickly as possible," Oberman said. "It gives us time to evaluate the market, compare aircraft and operators, and determine which option makes the most sense for that particular trip. During peak periods, having more choices matter."

The United States has thousands of airports available to general and business aviation, compared with the relatively small number served by scheduled commercial airlines. That access can become particularly valuable during holiday periods when major airline hubs, highways and commercial terminals experience heavy traffic, allowing passengers to depart from and arrive at airports closer to their homes or final destinations.

Private charter also provides families traveling together the ability to coordinate departure times around individual schedules and accommodate pets, luggage, catering and ground transportation into a single itinerary.

"During the holidays, time becomes incredibly valuable," Oberman said. "The benefit of private aviation isn't simply the aircraft. It's the ability to design the trip around the traveler rather than designing the traveler's schedule around the airline."
