Christian Pierce Named Head Football Coach at Calabasas High

The 48-year-old, who last season was the team's offensive coordinator, takes over for Larry Edwards, who guided Calabasas to a 3-7 record last year—one of the school's best football seasons in years.

Christian Pierce was named the new football coach at this week, replacing Larry Edwards, who resigned in December after going 3-7—one of the struggling program’s best seasons over the past 10 years.

Pierce served as the Coyotes' offensive coordinator last season.

“I feel great about it. I’m honored,” said Pierce, 48. “I’m looking forward to the challenge. We have a good corps of players coming back plus the support of the administration and the boosters. There is nowhere to go but up, so we’re going to ride the momentum. I’m looking for good things.”

Pierce was named to the post by school Prinicipal C.J. Foss, Assistant Principal Eric Anhalt and Assistant Principal of Athletics Brian Mercer. Edwards, unavailable for comment, was in his capacity as athletic director.

The new head coach said he is already familiar with the Coyotes' style of play.

“I’ve actually coached a lot of these kids since youth football, so I know their strengths and weaknesses,” Pierce said. “I’m looking forward to coaching them at the next level.”

Among Calabasas’ top returning players are running back/defensive lineman Tyson Jones and receiver/cornerback Caleb Madden, both of whom started as sophomores this season, when Calabasas won two Marmonte League games for the first time since 2002.

“[Pierce] coached me before, and we’re family friends, so everyone knows him and he’s well-liked by all the players,” receiver Matt Guttridge said. “Our main goal is to win more games.”

After going 1-9 in 2009 while failing to win a Marmonte League game for the seventh consecutive year, Calabasas on Oct. 1 to break a 53-league-game losing streak. Two weeks later, Calabasas for a second league victory. The Coyotes also in a nonleague game in the season opener.
