Dramatic Video Captures Sinkhole Forming In Calabasas
Huge pieces of pavement broke off of the street and fell into the sinkhole after a large pipe ruptured.
Wow! It’s not every day you see a #sinkhole forming — as it happens. Pavement caved-in. A 14 inch steel water main broke near Stunt Rd. and Mullholland Highway in the Santa Monica Mountains. Fortunately, no cars were on the roadway last night. Unincorporated #Calabasas @NBCLA pic.twitter.com/iMXBk4F1iX

CALABASAS, CA – Large chunks of asphalt broke away to reveal a large pool of muddy water underneath it, after a water main break caused a massive sinkhole in the Calabasas area.
A 14-inch pipe ruptured on Stunt Drive and Mullholland Highway, and filled the area with water overnight Saturday, CBS Los Angeles reported. After about an hour of water flowing underneath the road, the road itself caved in, according to ABC.
The pipe was about 50 years old, CBS reported.

“It’s probably just corrosion,” Duane Bockelman, of the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District, told the news station. “We don’t have a lot of sliding in this area. There is solid rock around here, so I imagine it is just going to be a corroded joint.”
The video was posted to Twitter by NBC Los Angeles reporter Gene Kang. The roads in the area remain open.
