This was a week we will never forget. Just when we were beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel with COVID-19 and our community was starting to reopen, our attention and emotions shifted to the horrific killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

We became glued to the news again watching the events unfold before our eyes. Before we knew it, the County of Los Angeles was on a curfew and the businesses we had worked so hard to help re-open in Calabasas were closing once again. Residents in our community came out in large numbers to participate in local peaceful protests. As a city, we condemn the killing of George Floyd. As we are beginning to see the protests end, the question is where does Calabasas go from here? To start, we will make sure that the conversation on race is not ignored in Calabasas. When we can join together again for community programs, we will look to have programming to speak about these issues and engage the community. Calabasas has always been a community where we thrive on learning about our neighbors and educating ourselves on things with which we might not have personal experiences. Diversity is a sign of a community's strength.

In the midst of what we all experienced this week, we cannot forget COVID-19 and the effect that is still having in our community. We have to continue social distancing and making decisions to protect those most vulnerable in our community. I also want to emphasize that our local businesses lost more days of work this week and could use all of our support. If you have the choice to shop or go to a restaurant for dine in or take out, please remember to support Calabasas businesses.

I know these times are challenging for all of us, but I continue to be comforted by the strength of our community. I know we all hope that the worst is behind us.

Your Mayor,
Alicia
