Sheriff's Station Gets Free Shoes for Relay to Vegas

Nike hands out free running shoes to deputies and sergeants participating in annual 120-mile relay.

Nike is sponsoring deputies and sergeants from the with free shoes for the annual 120-mile Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay, set for April 21-22.

Twenty runners and seven alternates gathered in the station's parking lot Wednesday to try on the complementary running shoes.

About 300 teams from law enforcement agencies around the globe partake in the nonstop relay, which begins in Baker, California and ends at the Las Vegas Hotel.

There are 20 legs in the race, each leg run by a member of a team.

"It's just a great chance to get together with other law enforcement agencies and share some camaraderie," said Sgt. John Skikas, who's done 12 Baker to Vegas relays.

Despite making memories, Skikas said the relay does pose some challenges and dangers.

"During the daytime it can be well over 100 degrees, even in March or April and it could drop below freezing and we could have snow in the evening because we go over a couple of high mountain passes," he said.
