Calabasas to Play Agoura to See Who Finishes Last in Marmonte Football

Local Sports: The showdown Friday at Agoura is the most anticipated game of the season.

It does not get any bigger for football.

After a string of losses and virtually no chance of making the playoffs, the visiting Coyotes can win some dignity Friday by defeating neighborhood rival Agoura.

Like Calabasas, Agoura has also had its rough patches this season. The Chargers (0-7, 0-6) have been outscored by an average of 33 points in Marmonte competition to 42 points for Calabasas. Friday's 7 p.m. showdown at Agoura basically decides which team finishes in last place.

“This game against Agoura is very important to us,” Calabasas first-year coach Christian Pierce said.

After winning its season opener Sept. 9, Calabasas has lost six in a row, but the latest loss, a 37-13 defeat to Newbury Park, was the closest Calabasas has been during the losing streak.

“We came out pretty strong and fought to come within 13-16, then a series of mental mistakes and poor field position gave Newbury Park great field position, and a costly interception was the game-changer, but we played hard,” Pierce said. “We knew this would be a transitional year. We will continue to develop and coach up our players to finish the season strong and set the tone for a winning program.”

Some of Calabasas' top players are running back Tyson Jones, quarterback Ike Fuchs, linebacker Jordan Pierce and receiver/defensive Matt Guttridge.

VIEWPOINT FOOTBALL CLOSES IN ON PLAYOFF BERTH

impressive football season continued Saturday with a 38-7 road win over Flintridge Prep at Occidental College—spoiling Flintridge Prep’s homecoming—and with three games left, the Patriots (5-2, 1-1) have a good chance to make the playoffs.

Winning two of the last three should all but do it, and even one win might be good enough. Viewpoint plays at Chadwick (4-3, 2-0) at 1 p.m. Saturday, then on Nov. 5 at Webb (4-3, 1-1) in Clarement, then the finale Nov. 11 against visiting Pasadena Poly (4-3, 0-2).

“We control our own destiny in regards to the playoffs,” Viewpoint coach Chris Adamson said.

The win over Flintridge Prep was Viewpoint’s first in series history.

“I was excited for our program, but more importantly because the win put the loss to Rio Hondo Prep [the previous week] behind us,” Adamson said.

Chadwick is favored by 10 on Calpreps.com.

“Chadwick is very explosive with a very good quarterback and a good overall team,” Adamson said. “They’re senior-heavy and experienced. We have to play our tails off on both sides and execute better on offense. But we are very capable of being in this one at the end and winning a tough one on the road.”

Viewpoint’s Adam Markun, a junior, has rushed for 629 yards and scored 11 touchdowns, and Joey Verhaugh has passed for 952 yards and 10 touchdowns.

“We’re getting better and better every week, and we are still on track to revolutionizing Viewpoint football,” Markun said.

COURT IN SESSION FOR HOOPS TEAM

With assistant coach Joe Frazier still hospitalized in a coma following a motorcycle accident, Calabasas High’s boys basketball team is trying to get on with its season, as the Coyotes are participating in a fall league.

“We played very hard last Saturday in winning games over Notre Dame and Crescenta Valley,” head coach Jon Palarz said. “I feel like we’re about where we should be at this time of year."
