Wedding Ring Stolen; Smash and Grab Off Local Trail

A $12,500 ring vanishes; a vehicle burglary is reported near the entrance to Las Virgenes Canyon Trail.

Wedding ring stolen from home

A platinum wedding ring valued at $12,500 was stolen from a residence in the 22000 block of Kearny Street.

The theft occurred sometime between 10 p.m. on March 2 and 8 a.m. on March 3, according to Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s deputies.

The victim told authorities that she waited two weeks to report the theft because she was hoping the ring would turn up in the course of her search.

The victim said she had a habit of placing the ring on top of the chest of drawers in the closet of her bedroom every night.

There was no one else that had access to her bedroom, she added.

There was no sign of any forced entry, according to deputies.

The victim’s cleaning lady was not scheduled to work that week, but a house painter was working in that area of the house for the past several days.

The wedding ring is also described as bearing a 2-carat diamond and having a clarity grade of S12. Both sides of the ring are accented by tapered baguettes having total weight of approximately .42 carats. The estimated color grade in the G-H range and clarity fo S11.

An investigation is ongoing.

Tools, iPod stolen from garage

A $500 toolbox and a $200 drill were stolen from the garage of a unit at Malibu Canyon Apartments, according to deputies.

A $200 iPod was also among the stolen belongings.

The theft took place sometime between 1 a.m. and 2 p.m. on March 10, authorities said.

The burglar apparently gained entry through the garage door. Deputies noted no signs of forced entry and the victim said she usually leaves the door unlocked.

The victim reported hiring a handyman to make repairs to her garage one month prior to the burglary. She said her upstairs neighbor recommended the handyman.

Authorities attempted to contact the neighbor, but he was not home.

Vehicle burglary near local trail

A purse and other belongings were stolen from a 2008 Subaru Outback in a smash and grab incident while the car was parked at the entrance to Las Virgenes Canyon Trail.

The victim said she concealed her purse in a retractable vinyl cover before she went on the hike.

When she returned, she noticed the vehicle’s drivers side window were smashed in, according to deputies. The victim’s purse, valued at $5, contained $40 in US currency as well as a $75 key to a Honda Civic.

The damage to the vehicle is estimated to be around $1,000, deputies said.
