What a Viewpoint: The Patriots Are Off to Fast Start in Football

Local sports: Viewpoint has won three in a row, all one-sided routs.

The Patriots came through with their third consecutive one-sided win Friday, knocking off visiting Bell-Jeff, 62-20.

After an opening loss at Mater Dei in Chula Vista, Viewpoint is averaging 52 points per game over the past three wins – a major development for a program that has never won a playoff game since moving up in 2004 from eight-man football.

“The team is really doing great,” running back Adam Markun said “We are starting to become more confident about our ability, and I think that will make us even better.”

Viewpoint has proven it can win at home, as the past three have all been in Agoura Hills. Now the Patriots want to prove they can win on the road at Western Christian in Upland on Thursday. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

Western Christian is 1-3 but coming off its first win.

“We’re excited for this season, and we’re pumped for our second away game,” Markun said.

In the win over Bell-Jeff, Joey Verhaugh completed 12 of 17 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns, including a 77-yarder. Markun rushed for 98 yards on 10 carries and scored three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving), and Darian Fardghassemi had four receptions for 151 yards and a touchdown. Michael Osborn had nine tackles, and Spencer Bernstein had eight.

Verhaugh, a Crespi transfer, has had a major impact. He has passed for 700 yards and eight touchdowns. Markun, coming off a 1,000-yard season, has 363 yards and seven touchowns.

CALABASAS LOOKS TO SHAKE OFF FOOTBALL LOSS

Calabasas High’s football team had another rough night Friday, losing 56-7 at Oaks Christian after falling behind by 35 points at halftime.

Ike Fuchs scored a touchdown, passed for 141 yards and kicked an extra point for Calabasas, as the visiting Coyotes were limited to 23 yards rushing.

Calabasas (1-3, 0-3), idle this week, has a bye before continuing Marmonte League play Oct. 6 at Simi Valley.

Simi Valley is 3-1, 2-1, including a 34-0 loss last week to St. Bonaventure.

TENNIS ANYONE?

After a successful season last year, Calabasas’ tennis team is back in action, and the Coyotes are 2-2 heading into a match today against Moorpark, followed by a Thursday match at Royal.

“We’re looking forward to executing what we practice this week,” coach Kim Kinberg said.
