SAN JOSE, CA — A one-year-old boy was fatally struck by a car in San Jose Tuesday afternoon, according to the San Jose Police Department.
On Tuesday just before 4:23 p.m., a gray Toyota minivan was traveling northbound in the driveway of an apartment complex when it struck a one-year-old child walking in the parking area, according to a police report. The pedestrian, identified by the Santa Clara Medical Examiner Coroner as one-year-old Olivier Carmelo Sgarlata of San Jose, was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said. Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be a factor.
This marks San Jose’s seventh pedestrian death and 16th fatal collision of the year, police said.
