CAMPBELL, CA — A 31-year-old Bay Area man died Saturday while swimming at a lake in Northern California, the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office said.
Deputies say the Campbell man swam to an island about 90 feet from the shore in Lake Tulloch sometime around 1 p.m. Lake Tulloch is about 75 miles northeast of Modesto.
On the swim back, he got tired and struggled to stay above water before drowning, authorities said, adding that he wasn't wearing a flotation device.
Officers responded to the scene around 1:08 p.m. and began looking for the man's body with the help of his friends, deputies said.
Rescue crews searched for hours to no avail. They finally found him 28 feet underwater around 4 p.m. after deploying an underwater remotely operated vehicle, deputies said.
His body has since been released to the Calaveras County Coroner’s Office, deputies said. His identity was not immediately released.
