Man Arrested After Hit-And-Run Kills Bicyclist In San Jose

SAN JOSE, CA — A 43-year-old man was arrested after a fatal hit-and-run collision involving a bicyclist in San Jose, police said.

Officers responded Tuesday to the area of North Capitol Avenue and Gay Avenue following reports of a collision between a vehicle and a bicyclist.

According to a preliminary investigation, a white 2025 Mazda SUV traveling northbound on Capitol Avenue struck an adult male bicyclist who was riding in the northbound bike lane.

Police said the driver fled the scene but stopped farther north on Capitol Avenue. Witnesses identified the driver, who was taken into custody by responding officers.

Investigators determined the Mazda had been reported stolen earlier that morning.

The bicyclist suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released the victim's identity pending notification by the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner.

The driver, identified as Nicholas Loftis, 43, was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, manslaughter, and possession of a stolen vehicle.

Police said the collision was San Jose's 19th fatal crash and 19th traffic-related death of 2026. The investigation remains ongoing.
