SAN JOSE, CA — Two people were injured Monday after a gyrocopter crashed near a local airport, according to the San José Fire Department.
Firefighters responded to the crash around 11:39 a.m. near the Reid-Hillview Airport.
Fire officials said two people were aboard the aircraft. One suffered moderate injuries and the other sustained minor injuries.
No fire was reported.
The crash also affected eastbound traffic on Tully Road at Eastridge Lane. Drivers were urged to avoid the area while emergency crews responded.
No additional information was immediately available.
A gyrocopter looks similar to a small helicopter, but it flies differently. Unlike a helicopter, whose engine spins the large overhead rotor, a gyrocopter is pushed forward by a rear propeller while the overhead rotor spins freely to create lift.
