Campbell Resident Receives Gift of Sight

Furlong Vision Correction Provides Free Vision Correction to Deserving Individuals

Dr. Michael Furlong opened Furlong Vision Correction in 1998 and he continues to provide the most advanced refractive vision correction procedures and is the most reviewed and highest-rated vision correction surgeon in Silicon Valley. Unlike cataract surgery, LASIK and PRK are elective procedures not covered by insurance. Dr. Furlong was inspired to start the Gift of Sight program in 2002 to be able to provide these services for up to ten deserving individuals each year who could not afford the procedure. To date, the program has provided over $1,200,000 in services.

In 2011, Dr. Furlong received the prestigious Jefferson Award - the "Nobel Prize" for community and public service - for the charitable Gift of Sight program

“Each year, Dr. Mona Sane, our staff and I are so inspired by the stories of our Gift of Sight patients, many of whom have faced challenges along with having poor vision,” said Dr. Michael Furlong, program founder and Furlong Vision Correction medical director. “We are grateful and privileged to be able to improve the lives of deserving individuals.”

Edgar Amaral-Montalvo - Gift of Sight Patient

Edgar Amaral-Montalvo, 30 years old, was born in Nayarit, Mexico and he currently lives in Campbell with his parents and two-year-old daughter, Eliana who loves pulling on his glasses. Edgar’s parents migrated to San Jose in the mid-nineties while Edgar and his three brothers - Adrian, his twin, and Albaro and Hernan - lived with their grandparents. The brothers all moved to San Jose when Edgar was six years old. Edgar went to Gardner Elementary before his family moved to East San Jose, where he attended William Sheppard Middle School and Macsa Academia Calmecac. When the high school closed in 2010, Edgar dropped out of school and started doing odd jobs, including construction work with his dad. In 2012, he began working for the Delta Queen Classic Car Wash in San Jose and he is now a customer and detail supervisor at Classic Car Wash in Los Gatos, working six days a week. Edgar noticed his vision was changing when he was 19 and he is thrilled to be a recipient of the Gift of Sight program!
