Caring for Your Senior When You are 60

Everyday chores become difficult to do as you grow older. It takes longer to clean up, cook or even bathe. Driving becomes problematic as joints hurt and eyesight weakens. You may have the will to do a lot of things but the body is unable to follow through. You tire easily and need your rest. When you get exhausted with just looking after yourself and your needs, it is next to impossible to care for your parent or other older relatives. People are living longer these days. There are many homes where people over 60 still have parents or other close relatives to take care of. What do you do when you need to take care of someone older than you when you are a senior yourself?

Get some help

If you are a fit senior citizen and are able to manage taking care of someone older than you, good for you. You can put off getting help for a while more. But if you are unable to cope, there are ways in which you can care for your senior at home with a little help.

Caregivers

There are home services that provide caregivers who will come home and help you out. You can customize the services to suit your needs. If you have a problem driving, the caregiver can run all your errands for you, from picking up your groceries to filling up your prescription. If you need a little help around the house, you can have someone come over a couple of days a week, to help clean up, wash etc.

Some people would prefer a few hours of help every day. The caregiver comes over for those few hours, and helps with chores around the house. If you are a senior citizen and have someone older than you that you are looking after, you can get a caregiver to come in and tend to them for a few hours. The caregiver will take care of anything from basic hygiene needs to hospital runs, depending on how much help you need.

Personal Assistants

They are also caregivers, but they will be available round the clock. If you are a senior, and the older relative you are taking care of is invalid or suffers from some form of dementia, you will need help night and day. A personal assistant will take care of all the needs of the invalid and could help you out too. Most home services have several care options and if you specify the areas that you need help with, they will make sure that you are given the aid that you require.

Most people prefer to take care of their elderly at home, even when they themselves have become quite old. Not everyone opts for an old age home or a nursing home unless absolutely required. They usually try to cope with the invalid themselves for as long as possible, and get a caregiver or personal assistant only when it becomes absolutely necessary. Quite often, seniors try to continue coping with an invalid elder even when they are unable to. This is not helpful to you or to your elderly relative. You will weaken your own health by doing more than you are capable of, and you will not be able to provide the kind of help to the invalid that a caregiver can.

If you are over sixty and have an invalid elder relative who lives with you and that you are responsible for, get help. It will make life much easier for both of you!
