Coroner IDs Motorcyclist Killed in Lane-Splitting Accident

A motorcyclist killed Sunday night while splitting lanes on U.S. Highway 101 in San Jose was identified as 27-year-old Asgard Lopez Hernandez, the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office reported today.

The medical examiner's office was unable to confirm Hernandez's city of residence. Hernandez was driving his Harley-Davidson north on Highway 101 north of Metcalf Road at about 8:15 p.m. Sunday when he tried to pass between two cars driving side-by-side, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Amy Tritenbach.

He struck the rear of a Honda Civic and was thrown from the bike, landing in front of a Honda Accord that hit him, Tritenbach said. Hernandez, who was wearing a safety helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The drivers of both the Civic and Accord, a 35-year-old San Jose woman and a 27-year-old Fremont man, stopped and cooperated with the CHP investigation, Tritenbach said.

Investigators will have to review toxicology tests to determine if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash, but the CHP has not found anything yet to indicate that, Tritenbach said.

No one will be charged in connection with the crash, she said.

A funeral for Hernandez is being held on Monday at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph in San Jose.
