Among four people running for three seats on the school board of the Campbell Union High School District (CUHSD), first-time candidate Richard Nguyen has emerged as the top fundraiser. Nguyen has also garnered the most endorsements from state, county and local officials.
Nguyen is an attorney who volunteers as a high school mock trial instructor and a mentor to at-risk high school students. He hopes to join the school board to utilize his classroom experience as well as his legal and public policy background to close the opportunity and achievement gap.

Recent campaign finance reports revealed that Nguyen has raised an impressive $20,000 haul – more than double the amount of any of the other candidate in the race.
More than 30 current and former elected officials have thrown their support behind Nguyen, including State Senator Jim Beall, County Supervisor Ken Yeager, and San Jose Councilman Don Rocha. Evan Low and a majority of the Campbell City Council have also endorsed Nguyen.

In supporting Nguyen, former San Jose Mayor Susan Hammer stated, “I trust Richard Nguyen. He grew up in San Jose and Campbell, and has always worked to improve our community, especially our schools.”
While these endorsements are a boost to his campaign, Nguyen plans to use the trust and support he has earned to build stronger ties between the CUHSD school board and the elected officials – especially school board members who represent the elementary and middle schools in the district – to benefit students.
Kalen Gallagher, who currently sits on the CUHSD school board, endorsed Nguyen, noting that “Richard’s leadership will move the District forward for our students.”
Nguyen has strong organizational support, which includes groups representing working families, women, and young people. The Campbell High School Teachers’ Association has also backed Nguyen.
He is also the students’ choice. The high school students Nguyen teaches have been knocking on doors every Sunday, asking residents to vote for their instructor.
“My students probably know better than anyone else how passionate and committed I am to helping all students succeed,” stated Nguyen. “The fact they are volunteering to spend their weekends to precinct walk for my campaign means the world to me.”
Even with the fundraising and endorsement advantage, Nguyen is not taking anything for granted. His biggest challenge is getting his message out to the more than 100,000 district voters.
As the only candidate who does not currently hold political office, Nguyen hopes to reach voters with a strong grassroots campaign and his positive vision for the district.
