The Tribute Chronicle in Ohio posted an article this morning about a family living in rented apartment struggling to deal with a bed bug infestation. The article says the family has been struggling with this problem for over 10 months.
It's important to understand that a serious infestation that has been happening for that long in an apartment complex has almost certainly resulted in secondary infestations in neighboring apartments. If the tenants are not reporting the problem to the property owner, and if the owner is not taking swift action to deal with the problem, it can grow to affect the entire property. The longer the tenant waits to report the problem, and the longer the property owner takes to deal with it, the more expensive it becomes to remediate, and the chances each treatment will solve the problem become less and less.
Let me be clear: The sooner the problem is delt with, the easier and cheaper it is to deal with it. That means tenants must always be watching for signs of bed bugs and report them to the property owner/manager right away, and then promptly and completely cooperate with the owners attempts to fix the problem, and the property owner must have problem professionally remediated as quickly as possible.
There are three ways to make sure you don't fall victim to a serious bed bug infestation: Make sure they aren't already present when you move in, and make sure you don't bring bugs into your home, and make sure you watch for the signs of bed bugs and immediately report it if you live in rental housing (bed bugs can move into your from adjoining units with infestations).
The best way to make sure there aren't already bugs in your home before you move in is to have a professional K9 Bed Bug Detection Team inspect your home before moving in. Regular inspections after you've moved in will provide you peace of mind that there are no bugs, and will allow you to detect the presence of bed bugs early if they are in your home, hopefully preventing a serious infestation.
