Historic Heritage Theatre Seeks Board Members In Campbell

No need to live in Campbell ... just a passion to support the arts in a community venue that dates to the 1930s.

CAMPBELL, CA — Friends of the Heritage Theatre in Campbell, a nonprofit dedicated to the city's historic performing arts venue, is launching a search for new board members .

Residence in the city of Campbell or prior board experience is not needed to serve, but passion for arts is required.

"This is a great opportunity to actively engage with and support the theatre and surrounding community,” said Samantha Ince, FOHT board president. "Our board members are passionate about the arts, the City of Campbell and the success of the Campbell Heritage Theatre."

The organization's goals are:

  • To promote the use of the Campbell Heritage Theatre as a performing arts venue.
  • To ensure that the Heritage Theatre is a resource for activities to benefit youth, and to benefit cultural enrichment for all residents of Campbell and Silicon Valley.
  • To raise funds to preserve, benefit, and support the use of the theatre as a vehicle to promote downtown Campbell and the cultural growth of the community.
  • To support the ongoing operation of the Heritage Theatre as a performing arts venue.
  • To educate the community as to the history of the Heritage Theatre and the historical significance of the building.

The Campbell Heritage Theatre, designed by architect William H. Weeks, opened in 1938 as the Campbell High School auditorium, with such era-specific embellishments as grillwork on the arched front windows and hand-painted tiles.

The site was turned over in 1980 to the city of Campbell, and structural concerns shuttered the venue in 1982. It stood “dark” for 20 years, before its restoration and grand opening in 2004, courtesy of Friends of the Heritage Theatre, the organization said.

The facility now hosts a year-round events .
