As I remember, the deposit on cans and bottles was started as a way to reduce litter. Back then 'we' drank beer while driving — then threw the container out the window so as not to be caught with an open container while driving. Now, after M.A.D.D. and all the other DUI efforts I don't see the need for a deposit. In our modern world pretty much all households have Recycle Bins, and I think most containers that would be recycled are recycled. The deposit is now just a tax and should be discontinued.
