Campbell marijuana initiative makes history, heads to April 25th ballot
Keep Campbell Green secures 4,782 signatures, makes history in the process.
CAMPBELL - In response to the city’s ban on medical marijuana, local group Keep Campbell Green has received enough petition signatures to qualify for the April 25th ballot. This also makes it the first successful citizen’s initiative since the city was incorporated in 1952. Wendy Wood, city of Campbell clerk confirmed a total of 4,782 signatures from residents, well over the 2,900 required.
In an attempt to derail the KCG citizen’s initiative, Campbell city council members voted to submit a competing measure that will cost taxpayers over $600,000. The city’s measure will prohibit medical marijuana activities, such as cultivation and dispensing.
Downtown business owner Mark Campos believes the city’s measure is a waste of resources. “It’s just ridiculous for them to waste all this money on fighting something that’s already legal. We could be using taxpayer money for something better”.
Campbell registered voters will have the final say on April 25th, when both measures will be placed on the Special Election ballot. An optional tax addition on medical marijuana sales will also appear, which if passed, would become adopted alongside the measure that receives the most votes.

Despite Californians passing Prop 64 last November, otherwise known as The Adult Use of Marijuana Act, Campbell residents may still not legally use/possess marijuana since council unanimously voted to adopt an urgency ordinance at its Nov. 1 meeting in the event Prop 64 became approved by voters. City manager Mark Linder told the council. “It does protect our local control”. Resident Christy Miller was unaware of the ban. “I was one of those people that voted to legalize(marijuana), I had no idea it’s still illegal in Campbell”.
