Santa Clara County Jail Inmate Dies At Hospital

An investigation has been launched into the in-custody death of the inmate, who was awaiting trial for murder and other charges.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA — A Santa Clara County jail inmate awaiting trial for murder and numerous other charges died Tuesday night at a local hospital, a sheriff's official said. The 28-year-old inmate whose name was not released was pronounced deceased at 7:29 p.m. Tuesday at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, where he had been hospitalized since April 5 for a preexisting condition, sheriff's Sgt. Richard Glennon said in a statement.

Prior to his hospitalization, the inmate was in custody for nearly five years — since Aug. 8, 2013 — at the Santa Clara County Main Jail in San Jose, Glennon said.

"The Sheriff’s Office is following standard protocol for an in-custody death that includes, but is not limited to; deploying Sheriff’s Office Detectives, notifying the District Attorney's Office, and the Medical Examiner Coroner’s Office," Glennon said.
