The First Paramedic Program in Northern California

A series of local history trivia, fun facts and odd occurrences.

In 1974, the Campbell paramedic program began – the first paramedic program in Northern California.

Here are some fun facts on this program:

  • Firefighters had to pay for their own training to become paramedics. 
  • , the first paramedic vehicle is housed in the Union Fire Station.
  • Campbell Fire Department was the first to use compartments to hold the breathing apparatus along the side of a fire engine. The cabinets kept the equipment much cleaner and easier to reach. Now most fire engines nationwide are equipped with “Campbell Cabinets.”
  • The Baby Sitting Seminar program started in 1967 and received nationwide publicity.
