• DUI suspect leads police on two pursuits with 3-year-old child in car in Santa Cruz County (ksbw.com) — A high-speed DUI pursuit that started when Capitola Police tried to stop an Acura on 41st Avenue ended on a nearby beach with a 3-year-old child found in the car. CHP says the driver twice fled officers, finally stopping near Hidden Beach County Park, where officers resolved a brief standoff and arrested both Las Vegas parents on multiple charges.
• Santa Cruz County releases safety guide for residents ahead of El Niño (santacruzsentinel.com) — Santa Cruz County is urging Capitola residents to get ready now for a potentially very strong El Niño, sharing specific steps for household safety, property protection, and evacuation planning. Officials point to the severe damage to the Capitola Wharf and nearby coastal areas during the 2022–23 storms as a reminder, and highlight new tools like CruzAware alerts and improved flood forecasting to help residents stay informed.
• Santa Cruz County immigration arrests steadily increase as nationwide arrests surge (santacruzlocal.org) — Santa Cruz County is seeing a modest but steady rise in immigration arrests, mostly involving people with criminal charges, while Capitola Police report no recent advance notices from federal immigration agents. Local public defenders and nonprofits are expanding efforts to help non-citizens understand how criminal cases affect immigration status and to connect residents with trustworthy legal support and emergency planning resources.
