Capitola and Soquel Unemployment Rates Lower Than State Average: EDD

Santa Cruz County, as a whole, has unemployment at 6.3 percent -- higher than state average of 5.5.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA – Santa Cruz County has an unemployment rate that tops the state average with 6.3 percent of the workforce unemployed, according to the latest report from the state's Employment Development Department.

In Capitola specifically, 300 people of the city's 5,900-member workforce were jobless in July for a 5.0 percent average, the agency says. In Soquel: 300 were unemployed from a pool of 6,000 for a 4.9 percent unemployment average.

Preliminary estimates for July unemployment in California were released last week.

Solano County, with a 6 percent rate, was among other area counties with a higher rate than the state's 5.5 percent, which was up 0.1 percent from June. The lowest unemployment rate was in San Mateo County, where only 3.4 percent of the workforce was unemployed. The unemployment rate in Marin County and in San Francisco was also less than 4 percent.

The San Francisco Bay Area has recorded low unemployment rates in the past year or more as the technology industry fuels a good portion of the economy.
