Central Fire Protection District Smoke Alarm Tips

Disconnecting your smoke alarm because you burn food is a bad idea. Smoke alarms need to be operational at all times.

It’s fire prevention week, and the Central Fire Protection District is emphasizing the theme “Hear The Beep Where You Sleep: Every Bedroom Needs A Working Smoke Alarm”.

Smoke alarms provide a warning when a fire is in its early stages. The alarm provides early detection, in many cases, before there are visible flames.

Tips for effective smoke alarm use:

1. Change the batteries at least once a year.

2. Change the batteries the same month every year to help to remember.

3. Some smoke alarms have 10 year batteries and do not require annual replacement. Be aware of what types are in your home.

4. Test the alarms once a month by pressing the test button.

5. Make sure that you have the right number of alarms in your home.

6. Insure that alarms are installed in appropriate locations.

7. Make sure that you also have working carbon monoxide alarms in your home.
