According to Wikipedia, Ice Cream Floats or Ice Cream Sodas may have been invented in 1874 by Robert McCay Green in Philadelphia as a way to attract customers away from another vendor who had a fancier, bigger soda fountain. Green must have been very proud of this beverage that quickly became popular – his will instructed that "Originator of the Ice Cream Soda" be engraved on his tombstone!
