National Kidney Month in March is the perfect time to educate the public about Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and the importance of prevention and the proactive ways we can reduce our risk of kidney failure. A few statistics that you might not be aware of:
- 1 in 9 Americans has CKD.
- CKD is the ninth leading cause of death in the United States.
- Diabetes and hypertension are known risk factors for CKD.
With 26 million Americans suffering from kidney diseases, it’s important to remember that this disease can strike any time, and anyone can be afflicted. There’s no reason why untreated and uncontrolled high blood pressure and type II diabetes should lead to a lifetime of dialysis treatments. Tests to check blood glucose levels and blood pressure are essential steps in preventing kidney disease.
