Man Arrested After Allegedly Driving 90-100 MPH on Hwy 1

The suspect did not appear to be under the influence, officers said.

An Aptos man was arrested Tuesday afternoon on suspicion of reckless driving after witnesses reported a vehicle driving at speeds of up to 100 mph in Santa Cruz County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A number of drivers called in reports of a white Honda driving recklessly on northbound state Highway 1 north of Mar Monte Avenue south of Rio Del Mar just after 1 p.m. Tuesday, CHP officials said. Witnesses said the driver nearly hit several other vehicles and was passing on the shoulder and in the center divider, traveling at speeds of 90 to 100 mph, according to the CHP.

A CHP unit spotted the Honda north of 41st Avenue near Capitola and saw the driver using both the shoulder and center divider. The driver stopped when the CHP unit pulled him over and yielded without incident, according to the CHP.
